Why Don’t People Give Biden Credit for Anything?

The four years of the Donald Trump presidency were, by most accounts, a near-total disaster. Trump bungled his way into numerous controversies and nearly started at least two wars. He failed to take COVID-19 seriously in its early months and helped contribute to the nation’s many pandemic failures. At the end of his presidency, he led a violent march on the Capitol that put the lives of staffers and members of Congress at risk.

By contrast, his successor, Joe Biden, has had a relatively successful record. He was able to continue Trump’s vaccine program and make millions of vaccines and boosters available to Americans. Biden also withdrew American troops from Afghanistan, funneled money and weapons to Ukraine in its war against Russia, and passed the largest program to combat climate change in American history. Unemployment has remained low for two years and inflation has begun to cool.

Despite these two records, many voters say they want to go back to the good times of the Trump administration. Trump gets much higher marks when voters are asked who is best positioned to aid the economy and solve many of the world’s problems. Voters often give Trump support even when they also oppose his stated policy on a particular issue. They say they do not trust Biden to handle…
